A Global Circle of Care: Reflections from the Befrienders Initiative Conference

From October 31 to November 1, representatives from suicide prevention centres came together for an inspiring and deeply meaningful Befrienders Initiative (BI) Conference. Over two enriching days, the gathering reinforced a shared commitment—to strengthen the global network of care for individuals experiencing emotional distress.

Honouring a Shared Mission

The conference commenced with a formal Inauguration on October 31, setting a powerful tone of unity, purpose, and collaboration. We were honoured by the presence of the BI Worldwide Chairperson, whose insights offered a global lens on suicide prevention and reaffirmed the importance of local action within a worldwide movement.

Learning, Sharing, and Growing Together

At the heart of the conference were the Paper Presentation sessions, where participating centres showcased research, real-world case studies, and innovative outreach initiatives. These exchanges sparked thoughtful discussions and meaningful learning, enabling participants to return to their communities with practical ideas and renewed confidence.

Celebrating Connection and Resilience

While our work carries deep responsibility, the conference also embraced moments of joy and creative expression. On November 1, the Cultural Programs brought everyone together through music, dance, and art—celebrating resilience, fostering connection, and reminding us that hope and joy play a vital role in healing.

Carrying the Impact Forward

More than an event, the BI Conference was a truly memorable and transformative experience. Participants left not only with knowledge and insights, but with strengthened relationships, renewed energy, and a deeper resolve to continue the essential work of suicide prevention—together.
